Roundnet scoring rules: how Spikeball is scored

Roundnet, often called Spikeball after the brand, uses rally scoring: every rally scores a point for the team that wins it, whichever team served. A standard game goes to 21 and must be won by 2, so 21-20 is not over yet; shorter games to 11 or 15 are common.

How does rally scoring work in roundnet?

Every rally ends in a point, whoever served. Teams are 2 against 2, and a team may use up to 3 touches to get the ball back onto the net. A rally ends when a team fails to make a legal return, and the other team takes the point.

Because the receiving team scores too, you never have to win the serve back before you can score, unlike side-out scoring, where only the serving team can score, as in traditional pickleball. One rally, one point, which is also why roundnet is easy to count with one tap per rally.

What does win by 2 mean in Spikeball?

At 20-20 the game carries on until one team leads by 2: 22-20, 23-21, 24-22 and so on. In a casual game there is no limit, so a close game can run well past 21.

Some tournaments add a point cap to keep to schedule: the first team to reach the cap wins, even by a single point. The event sets the cap, so check it before the first serve.

All three are won by 2 unless the event sets a cap.

A worked example: a deuce finish

North and South are level at 19-19 in a standard game to 21. The status line is what the scoreboard shows in Open-ended mode:

RallyScore (North, South)Status lineGame over?
120 ‑ 19North +1No: game point to North
220 ‑ 20TiedNo
320 ‑ 21South +1No: only 1 ahead
421 ‑ 21TiedNo
522 ‑ 21North +1No
622 ‑ 22TiedNo
722 ‑ 23South +1No
822 ‑ 24South +2Yes: tap End match

After rally 3, South have reached 21 but lead by only 1, so the game goes on. A First to 21 setting would have ended it right there, which is why roundnet needs Open-ended. South win 24-22 on rally 8.

How do you keep roundnet score on the scoreboard?

One tap per rally is exactly how roundnet scores, so the board counts it well. The catch is the finish: the scoreboard's First to 21 ends the game the moment a team reaches 21, even at 21-20, because it has no win-by-2 setting. For a real roundnet game:

  1. Set 2 sides and leave the winning score Open-ended.
  2. Tap the team that wins each rally.
  3. Watch the status line. Once a team has reached the target with a lead of 2 or more (+2 or higher), the game is over: tap End match.

Games to 11 or 15 work the same way; neither is a winning-score option anyway. In a capped tournament game, tap End match when a team reaches the cap.

How the app handles it

The scoreboard has no win by 2 and no point cap: a first-to game ends at the target on any lead, so Open-ended with End match is the right setting for roundnet. It does not track serve. On a 2-side board where you are one of the teams, Play With Friends lets a nearby friend score along on their own phone.

Questions

Is Spikeball the same as roundnet?

Roundnet is the name of the sport, and Spikeball is the brand of the best-known set, so most people use the two names for the same game. The scoring does not change: rally scoring to 21, won by 2.

Is there a point cap in roundnet?

Not in a standard casual game: you play on until a team leads by 2. Some tournaments set a cap to keep to schedule, and the first team to reach it wins, even by a single point.

How many touches do you get in roundnet?

Up to 3 per possession, shared between the two players, and the same player cannot touch the ball twice in a row. You do not have to use all three.
