Racquetball rally scoring vs side-out scoring

In racquetball rally scoring, every rally scores a point for whoever wins it, server or receiver, while under the USA Racquetball rulebook's side-out scoring only the serving side can score. The International Racquetball Federation (IRF) switched to rally scoring on 1 February 2022, first with games to 15 (won by 1) and a deciding fifth game to 11 (won by 2), and IRF World Championships now play every game to 11, won by 2.

The same 10 rallies under both systems

Here is one run of singles rallies, Us serving first, scored both ways with the app's own scoring rules. Each row is one rally, and each side wins 5 of the 10.

Under side-out scoring, 6 of the 10 rallies were side-outs that moved only the serve, so the score is 2-2. Under rally scoring every rally counted, so the score is 5-5, exactly the rallies each side won. That is why rally scoring games are shorter: every rally moves the score, so there are no long runs of side-outs with no points.

Why did the IRF switch to rally scoring?

Match length. The IRF said its matches were often too long, which made them harder to televise and meant racquetball needed too many days at the multi-sport games of the Olympic chain of events. Rally scoring makes games shorter, and the shorter games also let the IRF bring team competition back to its championships.

The USA Racquetball rulebook did not follow: it still uses side-out scoring.

What format do rally scoring events use?

  • IRF World Championships: Best of 5 games to 11, win by 2, including the fifth game. The IRF set the same format for its World Junior Championships.
  • The IRF's original rally format (February 2022): Best of 5 games, the first four to 15 and won by 1, and a fifth to 11, won by 2. The World Games 2022 in Birmingham, USA, used it.
  • USA Racquetball National Indoor Championships: Rally scoring over the best 3 of 5 games to 11, won by 2, as at the 2026 event.

Outside the events above, expect the USA Racquetball rulebook's side-out scoring to 15, 15 and 11, and agree on the system before the first serve. The full side-out rules are in how to keep score in racquetball.

What happens at 10-10 in rally scoring?

Because every rally scores, a game at 10-10 can swing on a single rally, so IRF World Championship games need a 2-point lead. Play goes on until one side is 2 ahead, with no cap.

Under side-out scoring the same 11-10 would end a tiebreaker, but only a side scoring on its own serve can get there.

How the app handles it

Sport Score Tracker offers both systems: side-out scoring is the default, and rally scoring is an option. In rally scoring every rally scores a point, the rally winner serves next, and match stats show serve points won and return points won instead of rallies won. For IRF World Championship-style games, set points per game to 11, the deciding game to 11 and win by two.

The app plays the best of 3 games, so it cannot score the best of 5 matches played at IRF World Championships or the US National Indoor Championships. Its win by setting also applies to every game, including the deciding one.

Questions

Can you score when you are not serving in racquetball?

Only with rally scoring. Under USA Racquetball side-out scoring, winning a rally on the return gives you the serve but no point.

When did racquetball change to rally scoring?

The IRF introduced rally scoring for its international events from 1 February 2022. The USA Racquetball rulebook still uses side-out scoring, although USA Racquetball's National Indoor Championships now use rally scoring.

Does rally scoring change who serves?

No. In both systems the side that wins a rally serves the next one. What changes is the score: under rally scoring the receiver's win is also a point, while under side-out scoring it only wins back the serve.
