Race to 7 in pool: how races work
A race to 7 in pool means the first player to win 7 racks (games) wins the match. Each rack counts 1, whoever broke, and the event or league sets the race length, such as a race to 7, 9 or 11 racks.
What does "race to" mean in pool?
A race is a match scored in racks. Win a rack and you score 1; the first player to the agreed number wins. There is no win by 2, so 7-6 is a finished match. A race to 7 is the same as the best of 13 racks, a race to 9 the best of 17, and a race to 11 the best of 21.
The discipline changes how a rack is won, not how the race is counted: in 8-ball you usually win a rack by legally pocketing the 8 after your group of balls, and in 9-ball by legally pocketing the 9.
Who breaks: alternate break or winner breaks?
The first break of a match usually goes to the winner of the lag, and a coin toss sometimes replaces the lag. After the first rack, the event uses one of two formats:
| Format | Who breaks each new rack | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| Alternate break | The players take turns, whoever won the last rack | The standard format in the WPA rules for 8-ball and 9-ball |
| Winner breaks | Whoever won the last rack | American Poolplayers Association (APA) league matches, and events that set it in their own regulations |
Under winner breaks, a strong breaker can win several racks in a row off their own break. Alternate break shares the breaks evenly.
How do handicapped races work?
In a handicapped race the two players race to different numbers. The best known system is the American Poolplayers Association's Equalizer: in 8-ball every player has a skill level, and a chart on the scoresheet sets how many games each must win. A skill level 6 playing a skill level 4 races 5 to 3: the 6 needs 5 racks and the 4 needs 3. Other leagues set races from ratings such as FargoRate.
A worked example: a race to 7
Ana and Ben play a race to 7 in 9-ball with alternate break. Ana wins the lag and breaks first:
| When | Team | Scoring play | Points | Score | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rack 1 | Ana | Rack won (Ana broke) | +1 | 1–0 | Ana won the lag and chose to break |
| Rack 2 | Ben | Rack won (Ben broke) | +1 | 1–1 | |
| Rack 3 | Ana | Rack won (Ana broke) | +1 | 2–1 | |
| Rack 4 | Ana | Rack won (Ben broke) | +1 | 3–1 | Ana wins a rack on Ben's break. Under winner breaks, Ana would have broken this rack |
| Rack 5 | Ben | Rack won (Ana broke) | +1 | 3–2 | |
| Rack 6 | Ben | Rack won (Ben broke) | +1 | 3–3 | |
| Rack 7 | Ana | Rack won (Ana broke) | +1 | 4–3 | |
| Rack 8 | Ben | Rack won (Ben broke) | +1 | 4–4 | |
| Rack 9 | Ana | Rack won (Ana broke) | +1 | 5–4 | |
| Rack 10 | Ben | Rack won (Ben broke) | +1 | 5–5 | |
| Rack 11 | Ben | Rack won (Ana broke) | +1 | 5–6 | Ben is on the hill: one rack from 7 |
| Rack 12 | Ana | Rack won (Ben broke) | +1 | 6–6 | Hill-hill at 6-6: the next rack wins the match |
| Rack 13 | Ana | Rack won (Ana broke) | +1 | 7–6 | Ana wins the race 7-6 |
A race to 7 lasts between 7 and 13 racks. Every rack counts 1, whoever broke. A race to 7 is not one of the scoreboard's winning scores, so this match is scored Open-ended and saved with End match after rack 13.
How do you keep a race score on the scoreboard?
Tap the player who wins each rack. A race to 10 is a built-in winning score, First to 10, so the board ends the match when a player wins their 10th rack. Races to 7, 9 or 11 are not options: set Open-ended, watch the score, and tap End match when a player reaches the race.
The board gives both players the same target and starts both at 0, so handicapped races such as 5 to 3 are not supported; keep those on the league scoresheet. It does not show who breaks or which rack you are on either. Add the two scores to get the racks played: under alternate break, when the total is even, the player who broke rack 1 breaks next.
How the app handles it
Only a race to 10 is built in, as First to 10; races to 7, 9 or 11 use Open-ended and End match. There are no handicaps, different targets or head starts, no break tracking, and a match of several races is not grouped: each race is its own game.
Questions
Is a race to 7 the same as best of 13?
Yes. A race to 7 can last at most 13 racks, because at 6-6 the next rack decides it. In general a race to N is the best of 2N - 1 racks.
What does hill-hill mean in pool?
Both players need one more rack to win the race, for example 6-6 in a race to 7, so the next rack decides the match. A player who needs one more rack on their own is "on the hill".
What is a lag in pool?
The usual way to decide who breaks first. Both players shoot a ball the length of the table and back, and the player whose ball stops closer to the head rail wins the lag and chooses who breaks.
