Pickleball rally scoring vs side-out scoring

In side-out scoring only the serving side can score, so a rally won by the receivers just wins them the serve. In rally scoring every rally scores a point for whoever wins it. Side-out is USA Pickleball's official method. Rally scoring is a provisional alternative, and since 1 January 2026 its game-winning point no longer has to be won on serve.

Here is one run of rallies in singles, Ana serving first against Cal, scored both ways with the app's own scoring rules. Ana wins 6 of the rallies and Cal wins 4.

Scored point by point by the same scoring rules the app uses.

Under side-out scoring, 4 of the 10 rallies were side outs that moved only the serve, so the score is 4-2. Under rally scoring every rally counted, so the score is 6-4, exactly the rallies each side won. Side-out scoring rewards holding serve: Cal won 4 rallies but scored only 2, because two of those wins came on the return. Rally scoring treats every rally the same.

What are the 2026 rally scoring rules?

The 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook, in force from 1 January 2026, keeps rally scoring provisional. Here is how it works now, starting with what changed:

  • No freeze. USA Pickleball dropped the freeze that required the game-winning point to be won on serve. Either side can win the game-winning rally.
  • Still optional. Rally scoring is up to the tournament director and is not allowed in some events. USA Pickleball reviews it after the 2026 season.
  • Score call. Serving team's score, receiving team's score, with no server number.
  • Serve. A team keeps serving until it loses a rally. The rally winner scores and serves next, from the right court when its score is even and the left when it is odd.
  • Game lengths. 11, 15 or 21 points, win by 2, played as one game, best 2 of 3 or best 3 of 5. Games to 15 or 21 are the usual choice.

Rally scoring arrived in steps. It started with singles, where provisional rally scoring took effect on 1 May 2024. It now covers doubles too, and the 2026 rulebook keeps it provisional for both.

How does the MLP DreamBreaker use rally scoring?

Major League Pickleball settles a level team match with a DreamBreaker. In short: Rally scoring to 21, players rotate every 4 points, and the game-winning point must be won on serve (2026 season). Because it must be won on serve, it keeps the freeze that USA Pickleball removed for 2026: a team at game point cannot win the DreamBreaker on the return.

Which system will you play?

In a USA Pickleball sanctioned event, expect side-out scoring unless the event says otherwise, since rally scoring is an option each tournament director chooses. In rec play it is whatever your group agrees, so settle it before the first serve. The underlying game does not change: 11 points, win by 2, in both systems.

How the app handles it

Rally scoring is the default in Sport Score Tracker, with no freeze: any rally can win the game, including one won by the receiving side, as in the 2026 USA Pickleball rules. Side-out scoring is an option, and in it a rally won by the receiving side passes the serve and scores no point; match stats then show Rallies Won in place of serve and return points won. In singles, the score comes out right.

Side-out doubles is only partly supported. The app passes the serve after any rally the serving team loses, so each team gets one server per turn instead of two. If you tap every rally, a point won by a second server is recorded as a side out with no point, and the score drifts from the official count. For side-out doubles, use the score caller, or play rally scoring in the app. The app does not support the freeze or the DreamBreaker player rotation.

Questions

Can you win a point on the return in pickleball?

Only with rally scoring. Under side-out scoring, a rally won by the receiving side wins the serve but no point.

Is there a freeze in pickleball rally scoring?

Not under the USA Pickleball rules from 1 January 2026: either side can win the game-winning rally. Major League Pickleball's DreamBreaker still has to be won on serve.

What is a side out in pickleball?

A side out is when the serve passes to the other side under side-out scoring. It happens when the serving side loses a rally with no server left: after both partners have lost one in doubles (just one server on a game's opening turn), and straight away in singles. No point is scored.
