How to run a trivia night scoreboard

To score a trivia night, give each team 1 point per correct answer, mark the answer sheets after every round, add each round to a running total everyone can see, and settle a tie at the top with a closest-number tiebreak question.

How is a pub quiz usually scored?

Trivia has no governing body, so the quizmaster sets the rules and reads them out before round 1. Most quizzes share the same simple shape:

  • 1 point per correct answer. It keeps marking fast and arguments short.
  • Rounds of a set number of questions, often on a theme, with answer sheets handed in or swapped for marking after each round. Geeks Who Drink, which runs pub quizzes across the US, plays rounds of eight questions.
  • Small teams. Geeks Who Drink caps teams at six players for prizes, a sensible limit for any quiz.
  • A running total after every round, read out or shown on a screen, so teams know where they stand going into the next round.

Some quizmasters add extras: a double-points round, a joker a team can play on its best round, or half points for a partly right answer. Decide these before the quiz starts and announce them with the other rules.

How do you keep a running score for many teams?

The scoreboard in Sport Score Tracker works well as the quizmaster's tally:

  1. Set the number of teams (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 or 10) and name each one. For 7 or 9 teams, pick 8 or 10 and leave the spare side at 0.
  2. Choose Not playing, because you are keeping score for the room rather than playing.
  3. Leave the winning score Open-ended. A quiz ends after the last round, not when a team reaches a number.
  4. After marking each round, tap each team once per correct answer. For a double-points round, tap twice per answer.
  5. After the last round, settle any tie at the top, then tap End match.

The status line shows the leader and their margin over second place, which is handy for the "going into the final round" announcement. The board keeps totals only, not a round-by-round table, so keep the marked answer sheets if teams want to check a round. Half points cannot be entered: the board only adds whole points.

How do you break a tie in trivia?

The usual tiebreak is a question with a number for an answer that nobody is likely to know exactly, such as "How many minutes are there in a week?" (10,080). Each tied team writes its answer down, so the second team cannot just say one more, and the closest answer wins. If two teams are equally close, ask another.

A level top score at End match is saved as a draw. If you want the saved result to show a winner, tap 1 point for the team that wins the tiebreak before you end the match, and tell the room that the tiebreak point is in the total.

A worked example: four teams, four rounds

Four rounds of 8 questions, 1 point per correct answer. Round by round, Owls, Foxes, Bears and Otters get 6, 7, 5 and 4 answers right, then 5, 6, 7 and 3, then 7, 4, 6 and 5, then 6, 7, 4 and 6. The status line is what the scoreboard shows once each round has been tapped in:

AfterScore (Owls, Foxes, Bears, Otters)Status line
Round 16 ‑ 7 ‑ 5 ‑ 4Foxes +1
Round 211 ‑ 13 ‑ 12 ‑ 7Foxes +1
Round 318 ‑ 17 ‑ 18 ‑ 12Tied
Round 424 ‑ 24 ‑ 22 ‑ 18Tied
Tiebreak point25 ‑ 24 ‑ 22 ‑ 18Owls +1

Owls and Foxes finish the four rounds level on 24. The Owls' 10,000 is 80 away from 10,080 and the Foxes' 12,000 is 1,920 away, so the Owls win the tiebreak. With the tiebreak point tapped in, End match saves Final 25 ‑ 24 ‑ 22 ‑ 18. Without it, the quiz would be saved as a draw between the top two.

How the app handles it

The board keeps one running total per team. There is no round-by-round table, no half points and no clock or timer, so keep the marked answer sheets and time the rounds yourself. Not playing is there for exactly this job: keeping score for others.

Questions

How many questions are in a pub quiz?

There is no fixed number; the quizmaster decides. A common pattern is several rounds of 8 or 10 questions, and Geeks Who Drink quizzes, for example, use rounds of eight.

How many people should be on a trivia team?

Most pub quizzes cap teams at around six; Geeks Who Drink's limit for prizes is six. For a family or office quiz, split people into teams of similar size so no table can outvote the rest.

How do you keep score for a pub quiz on paper?

Keep a master sheet with a row for each team, a column for each round and a running total at the end. Write each round's marked score in its box and add it to the total before the next round starts, so the standings are ready to read out.

Do you get half points in a pub quiz?

Only if the quizmaster says so before the quiz starts; many quizzes give whole points only to keep marking simple. A one-tap scoreboard cannot add half points.
