Pickleball score caller: what to call and who serves

Tap who won each rally and the caller tells you the score to say out loud, in the official order, plus who serves next and from which court. In side-out doubles the call is three numbers: serving team score, receiving team score, then server 1 or 2, starting at 0-0-2.

Pickleball score caller

0-0-2

We serve: server 2, from the right (even) court.

Start of the game: the side that serves first gets only one server on its first turn, so it starts as server 2.

Call the big number out loud before each serve. Reset or a new setting starts a new game (Undo brings the old one back), and nothing is saved: reloading the page clears it.

How to call the score in pickleball

The server calls the score before every serve, loud enough for everyone on court to hear. The order depends on the scoring system and on whether you play doubles or singles:

GameWhat the server callsExample
Side-out doubles (the traditional game)Server's score, receiver's score, server number (1 or 2)4-2-1
Side-out singlesServer's score, receiver's score4-2
Rally scoring, doublesServing team's score, receiving team's score4-2
Rally scoring, singlesServer's score, receiver's score4-2

The serving side's score always comes first. So when a 4-2 game changes serve, the other side calls it 2-4. Under the rules the full score is called before the serve, and the serve must follow within 10 seconds after the score is called.

To use the caller above, pick doubles or singles and the scoring system, say who serves first, then tap the side that won each rally. The big number is what the server says next; underneath it is who serves and from which court. For the rest of the rules, from winning by 2 to match formats, see how to keep score in pickleball.

The 0-0-2 start in the caller

In side-out doubles the team that serves first gets only one server on its first turn, so the caller starts every game at 0-0-2, not 0-0-1. When that player loses a rally, the serve passes straight to the other team at server 1, and from then on both partners serve in every turn. Server 1 is simply whoever serves first in a team's turn, so the number follows the turn, not the player. What 0-0-2 means explains the rule in full.

Side-out doubles, rally by rally

In side-out scoring only the serving team can score. A rally won by the receiving team scores nothing: it takes away a server instead. Here is the start of a game, worked out by the caller above:

Which court to serve from

Every serve goes diagonally, from one service court to the one opposite. Which court the server starts in depends on the game:

  • Side-out doubles. The first serve of every side out comes from the right (even) court. After each point won, the server switches court with their partner and serves again, so the next serve comes from the left. When server 1 loses a rally, server 2 serves from whichever court they are already standing in. The receiving team never switches.
  • Side-out singles. The server's own score decides: even (0, 2, 4...) from the right, odd (1, 3, 5...) from the left. That also applies straight after a side out, so a player who wins the serve back on 3 serves from the left.
  • Rally scoring. The serving side's score decides, the same way as singles: even from the right, odd from the left. In doubles, the partner standing in that court serves.

In side-out doubles there is a quick way to check your positions: when your team's score is even, the player who served first for your team in this game should be in the right court, and when it is odd, in the left court. Stacking is legal, because only the server and the receiver have to be in the correct court for the score; partners may stand anywhere on their side.

Rally scoring in 2026

Under rally scoring every rally scores a point for whichever side wins it, whoever served. The side that wins the rally serves next, so a team keeps serving until it loses a rally. There is no second server and no server number, so doubles is called with two numbers, serving team first, just like singles. Games are played to 11, 15 or 21 points, win by 2.

No freeze from 2026. The 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook took effect on 1 January 2026. It dropped the freeze that made the game-winning point in rally scoring count only when won on serve (Rules 4.B and 14.A.2). Now either side can win the game-winning rally: if they serve at 9-10 and you win the rally, you win the game 11-9. The caller follows the 2026 rule.

Rally scoring is still provisional. Side-out scoring remains USA Pickleball's official method, and rally scoring is a provisional option that organisers can choose (for singles from 1 May 2024, for doubles from the 2025 rulebook); rally vs side-out scoring compares the two. If your event plays a freeze, as Major League Pickleball's DreamBreaker does, the game-winning point only counts on serve. This caller does not model that, so check the event's format before you play.

Singles

Singles has no server number and no second server: one lost rally on serve is a side out. The call is two numbers, and the server's own score picks the court. You can read more in how singles scoring works.

Side-out singles: court by the server's own score

Edge cases

  • 11-10 is not a win. Games are won by 2 with no cap, so play goes on to 12-10, 13-11 and beyond. The caller keeps going until one side is 2 clear.
  • Side-out games end on serve. The receiving side cannot score, so a side-out game can only be won by the side serving. The caller never ends a side-out game any other way.
  • Changing ends. In a game that decides a match, or a one-game match, teams change ends partway through, and the serve stays with the player holding it:
    • Game to 11: When the first team reaches 6.
    • Game to 15: When the first team reaches 8.
    • Game to 21: When the first team reaches 11.
The score and the server number do not change, so the call carries on as before.
  • A new game. Every side-out doubles game starts at 0-0-2 again, whoever serves first. Reset the caller and pick the side that serves first.
  • A mis-tap. Undo removes the last rally and works the whole game out again from the start, so the call, the server and the court are all corrected. If Reset or a settings button cleared a game by mistake, Undo on the new, empty game brings the cleared game back.

How the app handles it

The Sport Score Tracker pickleball app keeps score with one tap per rally: you record only which side won it. Rally scoring is the default and side-out scoring is an option, for singles or doubles, in games to 11, 15 or 21. In side-out mode a rally won by the receiving side passes the serve and scores no point, and in rally scoring any rally can win the game, which matches the 2026 rule.

The app marks the serving side with a dot. It does not track server 1 and server 2: there is no 0-0-2 start, it does not call three-number scores like 4-2-1, and in side-out doubles the serve passes after any rally the serving side loses. It also does not show which player serves or from which court. For the full call, use this page alongside the app.

Questions

What order do you call the score in pickleball?

Serving side first. In side-out doubles call the serving team's score, the receiving team's score, then the server number (1 or 2), for example 4-2-1. In singles, and in rally scoring, call just the two scores, server first.

Which side do you serve from in pickleball?

In side-out doubles the first serve of every side out comes from the right (even) court, and the server switches court after each point won. In singles, and in rally scoring, the serving side's score decides: even from the right, odd from the left.

How do I start the next game on the score caller?

Tap Reset, then pick the side that serves first in the new game. In side-out doubles every game starts at 0-0-2 again, whoever serves first. Changing any setting also starts a new game.

What if I tap the wrong side, or reset by mistake?

Tap Undo. It removes the last rally and works the whole game out again, so the call, the server number and the court are all corrected. If Reset or a settings button cleared a game, Undo on the new, empty game brings the cleared game back.

What if we lose track of who is server 1?

The last number of the call is the server number, worked out from every rally you tapped, so the caller keeps track for you. To check on court, a team's starting server (the player who served first for that team in this game) belongs in the right court when the team's score is even and the left court when it is odd. If the court and the caller disagree, Undo back to the last score everyone agrees on and tap the rallies again.

Does the score caller save my game?

No. It keeps the game only while the page is open and stores nothing on your device. Reloading the page starts a new game.
