Pickup basketball scoring: 1s and 2s, win by 2
Many pickup games, especially half-court ones, are scored by 1s and 2s: a basket from inside the three-point line counts 1, a basket from behind it counts 2, and the first team to 11, 15 or 21 wins, usually by 2. Pickup has no rulebook, so agree the target, win by 2 and who gets the ball after a basket before the first check.
How does 1s and 2s scoring work?
Every basket is worth one point less than in a regular game, and there are usually no free throws. FIBA 3x3, the official half-court game, counts baskets the same way.
| Shot | Pickup (1s and 2s) | Regular game | FIBA 3x3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basket inside the arc | 1 | 2 | 1 |
| Basket behind the arc | 2 | 3 | 2 |
| Free throw | Usually none: a foul gives the ball back | 1 | 1 |
| Game ends | First to the target score | When the clock runs out | First to 21 points, or the higher score after 10 minutes |
The long shot counts for more than it looks. In a regular game a three is worth one and a half times a two; in 1s and 2s it is worth double, so one shot from behind the arc wipes out two baskets from inside it. Down 10-8, a single long shot ties the game, where in a regular game one three cannot cancel two 2s. Some groups keep regular 2s and 3s instead.
What score do you play to?
Common targets are 11, 15 and 21. Short games suit a busy court, where the winners stay on and the team that called "next" plays them. With 1s and 2s, a game to 11 takes at least 6 baskets (five 2s and a 1) and a game to 21 at least 11.
Do you have to win by 2 in pickup basketball?
Usually, yes. Under win by 2, reaching the target is not enough: at 11-10 in a game to 11 play goes on until one team leads by 2, such as 12-10 or 14-12. Playing straight up, sometimes called first to 11, ends the game the moment a team reaches the target on any lead.
Some courts add a cap so a close game cannot run forever, such as a game to 11 that the first team to 15 wins, 2-point lead or not.

| 12 | Skins | Jumper from behind the arc | +2 | 10–10 | Tied at 10: now a 2 wins the game, a 1 does not |
| 13 | Shirts | Layup | +1 | 11–10 | 11 reached, but only 1 ahead, so play on |
| 14 | Shirts | Layup | +1 | 12–10 | 2 ahead: Shirts win 12-10 |
Pickup scoring is a house rule. Agree the target, win by 2 and who gets the ball after a basket before the first check.
Make it, take it or losers' ball?
- Make it, take it (also called winners' ball): the team that scores keeps the ball and checks it again. A hot team can close out a game in one run.
- Losers' ball: the team that was scored on gets the ball, as after a basket in a regular game. Games stay closer and more players touch the ball.
FIBA 3x3 plays losers' ball: after each basket, a player from the team that did not score restarts from directly under the basket and dribbles or passes the ball out behind the arc.
What about fouls and free throws?
Pickup games usually have no referee and no free throws. The player who is fouled calls it, and their team gets the ball back at the top of the key instead of going to the line.
How the app handles it
The basketball score tracker has no target score and no FIBA 3x3 mode: it will not stop a game at 11 or 21 or check for a 2-point lead, because a basketball match only ends when you finish the last period.
You can still keep a 1s and 2s score on the basketball board. Pick Halves, then tap a team and choose Free throw (+1) for a 1 or 2 points (+2) for a 2. The status line shows the leader's margin, so a 2-point lead is easy to spot. When a team wins, tap Next half, then End match. With Pro, your 1s show up as free throws in the match stats.
Or use the Universal Scoreboard, where every tap adds 1 point, so a 2 is two taps. For a game to 21 straight up, set the winning score to First to 21: the game ends the moment a team reaches 21. For win by 2, or a game to 11 or 15, leave it Open-ended and tap End match once a team has reached the target 2 points ahead. Neither board checks for a 2-point lead for you.
Questions
What does check ball mean in basketball?
It is how a half-court pickup possession starts or restarts. The player with the ball passes it to the defender at the top of the key, the defender passes it back, and play starts, so nobody can score before the defence is ready.
Is a game to 21 the same as the game called 21?
No. Twenty-one is an every-player-for-themselves game, usually with free throws after each basket and a rule that you must finish on exactly 21; in many versions, going over sends you back to 11. A team game to 21 is simply the first team to 21 points, often by 2.
What does "got next" mean in pickup basketball?
It claims the next game. On a busy court the winners stay on, and the player or team that called next plays them when the current game ends.
