How long is a basketball game?
An NBA game has 48 minutes of playing time (4 quarters of 12 minutes). FIBA, WNBA and NCAA college games have 40, and US high school games have 32 (4 quarters of 8 minutes). Because the clock stops so often, an NBA game takes about 2 hours 15 minutes in real time.
Basketball game length by level
Each level links to its official rules.
| Level | Periods | Total | Overtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBA | 4 quarters of 12 minutes | 48 minutes | 5 minutes |
| WNBA | 4 quarters of 10 minutes | 40 minutes | 5 minutes |
| FIBA | 4 quarters of 10 minutes | 40 minutes | 5 minutes |
| NCAA men | 2 halves of 20 minutes | 40 minutes | 5 minutes |
| NCAA women | 4 quarters of 10 minutes | 40 minutes | 5 minutes |
| US high school (NFHS) | 4 quarters of 8 minutes | 32 minutes | 4 minutes |
FIBA rules cover international games and most leagues outside North America; NCAA is US college basketball. A single game cannot end tied at any of these levels: if the score is level when regulation ends, overtime periods are played until one team leads at the end of one. The one exception is the first game of a FIBA two-game, home-and-away series decided on total points, which can end level.
How long is a basketball game in real time?
Much longer than the playing time, because the game clock stops for fouls, free throws, timeouts, balls out of bounds and replay reviews. An NBA game takes about 2 hours 15 minutes from tip-off to final buzzer: that was the average over the 15 seasons to 2023-24, and midway through the 2024-25 season games were running at 2 hours 16 minutes, according to ESPN Research.
For other levels, the rules give you a minimum: the playing time plus the scheduled breaks, before a single timeout, foul or free throw.
| Level | Playing time | Scheduled breaks | Real time, at least |
|---|---|---|---|
| FIBA | 40 minutes | 19 minutes | 59 minutes |
| NCAA men and women | 40 minutes | 15-minute halftime, plus quarter breaks for women | 55 minutes |
| US high school | 32 minutes | 12 minutes (up to 17) | 44 minutes |
Timeouts, fouls, free throws and reviews all come on top, so a real game runs longer than its minimum.
How long is halftime in basketball?
15 minutes in NBA, FIBA and NCAA college games, and 10 minutes in US high school. Games played in quarters also have short breaks between quarters:
- FIBA: 2 minutes after the 1st and 3rd quarters and before each overtime, and 15 minutes at halftime. A 40-minute FIBA game has 19 minutes of breaks built in.
- US high school: 1 minute after the 1st and 3rd quarters and 10 minutes at halftime, which can stretch to 15 if the home team tells the visitors before the game.
How long is overtime in basketball?
Five minutes in the NBA, the WNBA, FIBA competitions and NCAA college games, and 4 minutes in US high school varsity games. There is no limit on how many overtimes a game can have. Each overtime adds its own break too: 2 minutes under FIBA rules and 1 minute in US high school. A triple-overtime NBA game has 63 minutes of playing time instead of 48.
Does college basketball play halves or quarters?
Both, depending on the game. NCAA men's basketball plays 2 halves of 20 minutes. NCAA women's basketball switched from two 20-minute halves to 4 quarters of 10 minutes in 2015-16. The men's rules committee discussed quarters in May 2026, but the 2026-27 rules keep halves.
The format changes more than the clock, because team fouls reset with each period:
- Halves (NCAA men): One-and-one from the 7th team foul in a half, 2 free throws from the 10th.
- Quarters (NBA, FIBA, NCAA women and US high school): 2 free throws from the 5th team foul in a quarter.
How long are high school and youth basketball games?
US high school varsity games under NFHS rules are 4 quarters of 8 minutes, 32 minutes in all. With the scheduled breaks, a varsity game takes at least 44 minutes before any timeout or free throw. NFHS rules shorten games involving only students below ninth grade to quarters of 6 minutes, 24 minutes in all. State associations and youth leagues often set their own rules for younger players, so check with the league.
For children, the NBA and USA Basketball youth guidelines recommend shorter games that grow with age:
| Age | Recommended playing time |
|---|---|
| 7 to 8 | 20 to 28 minutes |
| 9 to 11 | 24 to 32 minutes |
| 12 to 14 | 28 to 32 minutes |
How the app handles it
The basketball score tracker counts periods, not minutes: it has no game clock, quarter or half timer, or shot clock. Pick Quarters (4 periods) or Halves (2), tap Next quarter or Next half when the period ends, and End match after the last one. It does not support other period counts or lengths, and it has no overtime: a tie at the end is saved as a draw. With Pro, the match stats break the score down by quarter or half.
