Flag football scoring rules
In NFL FLAG, the NFL's youth flag football program, a touchdown is worth 6 points and the scoring team then runs one more play for extra points: 1 from the 5-yard line or 2 from the 10. A safety is worth 2, and so is an interception returned during a try. There is no kicking, so there are no field goals.
Flag football scoring at a glance
| Scoring play | Points | How it is scored |
|---|---|---|
| Touchdown | 6 | Run or catch the ball into the other team's end zone |
| 1-point try | 1 | A play from the 5-yard line. It must be a pass (no-run zone) |
| 2-point try | 2 | A play from the 10-yard line, run or pass |
| Safety | 2 | The ball carrier is down in their own end zone |
| Interception returned during a try | 2 | The defense intercepts a try and runs it back to the other end zone |
| Field goal | None | No kickoffs or field goals: nothing is kicked in NFL FLAG |
Put together, a touchdown is worth 6, 7 or 8 points, just as in tackle football, but nobody kicks: a team picks the value of its try by picking the distance.
How do extra points work in flag football?
After a touchdown, the scoring team declares 1 or 2, and the ball is spotted at the 5-yard line or the 10-yard line for one play. A pass caught in the end zone or a run across the goal line scores; anything else scores nothing, and the touchdown's 6 points stand.
The 1-point try from the 5 has to be a pass: NFL FLAG has no-run zones in the 5 yards before each goal line and before midfield. The 2-point try starts outside the zone, so the offense can run or pass.
The defense can score during a try too. If it intercepts a pass on either try and returns it all the way to the other end zone, it scores 2 points, whether the try was for 1 or for 2.
For when a 2-point try is worth the risk, see when to go for two, remembering that flag has no field goals.
How is a safety scored in flag football?
A safety is worth 2 points to the defense. It is called when the ball carrier is down in their own end zone: a flag pulled there, a flag that falls out, a knee or arm touching the ground, or a snap that lands in the end zone. Most possessions start at the offense's own 5-yard line, so the end zone behind the offense is never far away.
Are there field goals or kickoffs in flag football?
No. NFL FLAG has no kicking of any kind. Every possession starts at the offense's own 5-yard line, including the one after a touchdown and its try, unless it begins with an interception. Without field goals, a flag team only scores in 2s (a safety or a returned try) and in touchdowns worth 6 to 8, so a team can never finish regulation on 1, 3 or 5 points. The score combinations tool has a flag mode that checks any total.
How long is a youth flag football game?
It depends on the league:
| Rule set | Game length |
|---|---|
| NFL FLAG 2025 regular-season rules | Two 20-minute halves on a running clock |
| NFL FLAG rules page, for local leagues | Two halves of 15 to 25 minutes, depending on the league |
| Tournaments | Usually shorter halves |
On the running clock, time stops only for timeouts, injuries and halftime, although some leagues also stop it in the final minutes. Younger age groups often play shorter games, and ties are up to the league.
A flag football game scored play by play
Here is a youth game between Blue and Gold with both kinds of try, a safety and a returned try. The first column is the half.
| When | Team | Scoring play | Points | Score | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st half | Blue | Touchdown | +6 | 6–0 | |
| 1st half | Blue | 1-point try from the 5 | +1 | 7–0 | From the 5 it must be a pass. Caught. |
| 1st half | Gold | Touchdown | +6 | 7–6 | |
| 1st half | Gold | 2-point try from the 10 | +2 | 7–8 | A run from the 10: Gold leads 8-7. |
| 1st half | Blue | Safety | +2 | 9–8 | A Gold flag pulled in Gold's end zone. Halftime 9-8. |
| 2nd half | Gold | Touchdown | +6 | 9–14 | |
| 2nd half | Blue | Interception returned on the try | +2 | 11–14 | Gold goes for 2; Blue intercepts and runs it back. |
| 2nd half | Blue | Touchdown | +6 | 17–14 | Blue takes the lead. |
| 2nd half | Blue | 1-point try, no good | +0 | 17–14 | Pass dropped. Final: Blue wins 17-14. |
Running totals added up at build time. Touchdown, try and safety values are checked against the NFL FLAG rules; there are no field goals in flag.
In the second half, Gold goes for 2 from the 10 to stretch its lead, and Blue's interception return turns a possible 16-9 Gold lead into 14-11. Blue then needs only a touchdown to go ahead, and the missed 1-point try at the end does not matter.
How the app handles it
Sport Score Tracker has no flag football preset: the Field goal button stays in the scoring plays and the 1-point option is labelled as a kick, but the standard board keeps a flag score correctly if you skip Field goal. Tap a team and choose Touchdown +6, then tap the same team again and choose Extra point (kick +1) for the 1-point try from the 5, 2-point (+2) for the try from the 10, or No good (+0). For a safety, tap the defending team and choose Safety +2.
For a try returned by the defense, choose No good, then add Safety +2 to the team that intercepted: the total is right, though the play is recorded as a safety. For a two-half game, set Periods to Halves, and choose Not playing when you keep score for a youth game. There is no game clock or overtime, so a tie after the last half is a draw.
Questions
How many players are on the field in flag football?
NFL FLAG plays 5 on 5. There is no tackling: defenders stop the ball carrier by pulling a flag from their belt.
Are there fumbles in flag football?
No. Under NFL FLAG rules there are no fumbles: a ball that hits the ground is dead and stays with the offense, so the defense cannot pick it up and score.
Is flag football an Olympic sport?
Yes. The IOC added flag football to the program for LA28, the Los Angeles 2028 Games, played 5 on 5 by men and women under international (IFAF) rules. They score touchdowns and tries as NFL FLAG does: 6, then 1 from the 5-yard line or 2 from the 10.
Do all flag football leagues score the same way?
No. The values here are NFL FLAG's. Other leagues can set their own try distances and point values, so check before the game.
