How to keep score in basketball
Basketball scoring is simple addition: a made free throw is worth 1 point, a basket from inside the three-point line 2 and a basket from behind it 3. The team with more points when the last quarter ends wins, and a tied game goes to overtime until one team leads.
Basketball scoring at a glance
| Play | Points | What counts |
|---|---|---|
| Free throw | 1 | Each made free throw, taken unguarded from the free-throw line after a foul |
| Field goal (a 2) | 2 | Any made shot from inside the three-point line: layups, dunks, tip-ins and jump shots |
| Three-pointer | 3 | A made shot from behind the three-point line |
| And-one | Basket + 1 | The basket counts plus 1 free throw when the shooter is fouled and scores anyway |
FIBA vs NBA scoring
The point values are the same in the NBA and under FIBA rules, which most of the world plays. The court and the clock are not:
| Rule | FIBA | NBA |
|---|---|---|
| Point values | 1, 2 or 3 | 1, 2 or 3 |
| Three-point line | 6.75 m (6.60 m in the corners) | 23 ft 9 in (7.24 m), 22 ft (6.71 m) in the corners |
| Game length | 4 quarters of 10 minutes | 4 quarters of 12 minutes |
| Fouls before a player fouls out | 5 | 6 |
For young players, the NBA and USA Basketball youth guidelines recommend no three-point baskets at ages 11 and under, so check your league's rules before a kids' game.
Is a shot on the three-point line worth 2 or 3?
Two. The line itself is inside the two-point area, so a shooter with a foot on the line scores 2. What counts is where the shooter last touched the floor before the shot, not where they land: a jump shot taken from behind the line is worth 3 even if the shooter comes down inside it.
When do you get free throws?
Free throws come from fouls, and each one made adds 1 point. An ordinary foul on a player who is not shooting only gives free throws once the fouling team is in the penalty, also called the bonus. Before that, play restarts with a throw-in.
| Situation | Free throws |
|---|---|
| Fouled while shooting, shot misses | 2 free throws, or 3 on a three-point attempt |
| Fouled while shooting, shot goes in | 1, and the basket counts (the and-one) |
| Team fouls: NBA, FIBA and NCAA women | 2 free throws from the 5th team foul in a quarter |
| Team fouls: US high school (NFHS) | 2 free throws from the 5th team foul in each quarter |
| Team fouls: NCAA men | One-and-one from the 7th team foul in a half, 2 free throws from the 10th |
| Technical foul (FIBA) | 1 |
| Disruptive or flagrant foul (FIBA from 1 October 2026; the unsportsmanlike foul before that), or flagrant foul (NBA) | 2 free throws plus possession |
A one-and-one means the second free throw is only taken if the first goes in. US high schools dropped it from the 2023-24 season. The NBA adds one more trigger: in the last 2 minutes of a quarter, a team not already in the penalty gives 2 free throws from its 2nd team foul.
How do you keep a running score?
Write down every made basket and free throw as it happens: the team, the points and the new total. Adding as you go, rather than counting baskets at the end, means the score is always one glance away and a mistake is easy to find. Only made shots count. A missed shot or a missed free throw adds nothing, so there is nothing to write.
Here is the first quarter of a high school game kept that way, including an and-one, three free throws after a foul on a three, and a foot on the line:
| When | Team | Scoring play | Points | Score | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 7:32 | Eagles | Layup | +2 | 2–0 | Any basket from inside the three-point line counts 2 |
| Q1 6:58 | Hawks | Three from the corner | +3 | 2–3 | Shot from behind the line: 3 |
| Q1 6:10 | Eagles | Jump shot, fouled while shooting | +2 | 4–3 | The basket counts and the shooter gets 1 free throw: an and-one |
| Q1 6:10 | Eagles | And-one free throw | +1 | 5–3 | Made, so the play is worth 3 in all |
| Q1 5:02 | Hawks | Free throw, 1st of 3 | +1 | 5–4 | Fouled on a three that missed: 3 free throws |
| Q1 5:02 | Hawks | Free throw, 3rd of 3 | +1 | 5–5 | The 2nd free throw missed, so nothing is written for it |
| Q1 3:47 | Eagles | Jump shot, foot on the line | +2 | 7–5 | The line belongs to the two-point area |
| Q1 2:15 | Hawks | Dunk | +2 | 7–7 | A dunk is worth the same as any other 2 |
| Q1 0:02 | Eagles | Three with 2 seconds left | +3 | 10–7 | End of the 1st quarter: Eagles 10, Hawks 7 |
| Q2 7:41 | Hawks | Layup | +2 | 10–9 | The score carries over: a new quarter never resets it |
Only made baskets and made free throws are written down. Missed shots, rebounds and fouls do not change the score.
How do quarters and halves add up to the final score?
Points add up across the whole game: a new quarter, or a new half in NCAA men's games, never resets the score. The basketball game length guide has the period lengths for every level.
Scorers also keep each team's points per quarter, called the line score. It shows where a game turned, and it is a free check on your running score: the quarters must add up to the final. Here is the rest of the game from the table above:
| Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Final |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eagles | 10 | 11 | 15 | 13 | 6 | 55 |
| Hawks | 7 | 15 | 12 | 15 | 4 | 53 |
The Hawks led 22-21 at halftime and the Eagles led 36-34 after three quarters. Both teams had 49 when the 4th quarter ended, so the game went to overtime, which the Eagles won 6-4 for a 55-53 final.
How do you fill in a basketball scorebook?
In an official game the scorer at the table keeps more than the score. A scorebook or scoresheet tracks four things:
- The running score: a column of numbers for each team. After each basket or made free throw, cross off the team's new total and write the scorer's shirt number beside it. FIBA's official scoresheet marks a free throw with a filled dot and circles the shooter's number for a three; other books have their own marks, so follow the key on yours.
- Personal fouls: a box for each foul beside the player's name, so you can tell the officials the moment a player fouls out.
- Team fouls: a count for each quarter (each half in NCAA men's games), which tells you when a team reaches the bonus in the table above.
- Timeouts: a mark for each one taken. Under FIBA rules each team gets these timeouts: 2 in the first half, 3 in the second half, 1 in each overtime.
What happens if a basketball game is tied?
No ties: a level score after regulation goes to overtime. The score carries on from the tie, and teams play as many overtime periods as it takes for one of them to lead at the end of one. How long each overtime lasts depends on the level: see how long overtime is. The one exception is the first game of a FIBA two-game, home-and-away series decided on total points: it can end level, and overtime is played only if the two-game total is tied at the end of the second game.
Overtime points go into their own column of the line score and into the final total. Under FIBA rules, team fouls in overtime count as part of the 4th quarter, so a team already in the penalty stays in it.
How the app handles it
In the basketball score tracker, tap a team to open its scoring menu: 2 points (+2), 3 points (+3) or Free throw (+1). The big number on each side is that team's running total, and the status line shows the quarter and the lead, for example Q3 ยท Eagles +6. There is no single and-one button: enter the basket, then a free throw.
It has no game clock or shot clock. Tap Next quarter to move on and End match after the 4th quarter, or pick Halves for 2 periods. It records made baskets and made free throws only. It does not track misses, team fouls, the bonus, foul-outs or timeouts, so enter bonus free throws as Free throw (+1) when they go in. It has no overtime: a level score when the match ends is saved as a draw. Undo removes the last entry. With Pro, the match stats show points by quarter, the 2s, 3s and free throws made, the biggest lead, lead changes and the longest scoring run.
Questions
What is a 4-point play in basketball?
A made three-pointer on which the shooter was fouled, followed by a made free throw: 3 points for the basket plus 1 for the free throw. The same thing on a 2 is a 3-point play, usually called an and-one.
Does a basket count if you score in your own hoop?
Yes, for the other team. Under FIBA rules an accidental basket in your own team's basket is worth 2 points to the opponents, credited to the opposing captain on the court. A deliberate one is a violation and does not count.
How many fouls before a player fouls out?
5 under FIBA rules and in US college and high school games, and 6 in the NBA and the WNBA. Fouls never change the score by themselves; they matter because of the free throws they give.
How many points is a half-court shot worth?
3, the same as any other shot from behind the three-point line. The official rules give no extra points for distance.
