Wiffle ball rules and how to keep score
Official WIFFLE Ball rules play like baseball without base running: 1 to 5 players a side, 3 outs per side each inning and 9 innings, with extra innings to break a tie. Hits are judged by where the ball lands, and you keep score just like baseball, counting runs inning by inning.
What are the official WIFFLE Ball rules?
The Wiffle Ball, Inc., the Connecticut company that makes the ball, publishes a short set of official rules. They keep baseball's structure and drop the running:
| Rule | Official WIFFLE Ball rules |
|---|---|
| Players | 2 to 10: at least 1 a side (a pitcher and a batter), at most 5 a side |
| Full team in the field | Catcher, pitcher, and one fielder each for the double, triple and home run areas. Fielders stay in their own area |
| Base running | None |
| Hits | Set by where a ball that is not caught lands. Markers on the foul lines split the field: a single up to about 24 feet from home plate, a double in the next 20 feet, a triple in the 20 feet after that, and a home run beyond the triple markers |
| Strikes | A pitch through the target strike zone in the air, a swing and miss, or a foul. A foul counts only as the first or second strike |
| Strikeouts | Only by swinging and missing at strike three |
| Outs | 3 outs retire a side each inning |
| Game length | 9 innings; a tie goes to extra innings |
Scoring is baseball's: every run is worth 1, and the side with more runs after the last inning wins.
How do runs score without base running?
With ghost runners, also called invisible runners. A hit puts an imaginary runner on the base it earns, and later hits move the ghosts along. A ghost who reaches home scores a run, just like a real runner.
The official rules do not settle how far ghosts move, so agree before the first pitch. The two common versions:
- Move with the batter: every ghost runner advances as many bases as the batter. A single scores a ghost from third; a double scores ghosts from second and third.
- Move only when forced: a ghost advances only if the batter or another ghost needs its base. A single with a ghost on third alone scores nobody.
Either way, a home run clears the bases: the batter and every ghost score, so a grand slam is 4 runs.
Common backyard and league variants
- Shorter games. Nine innings takes a while in the yard, so many groups and leagues play 5 or 6 innings instead.
- No called balls or strikes. The World Wiffle Ball Championship has no called pitches and no unintentional walks: batters strike out swinging, and each team may intentionally walk one batter per game.
- A mercy rule. The same tournament ends a game when a team leads by 15 runs after the 3rd inning or any later inning.
- Smaller teams. Teams in that tournament have four or five players and may never play with fewer than four. Backyard games play with whoever turns up.
House rules vary most on ghost runners, the strike zone and where each hit area starts and ends, so settle those three before you start.
How do you keep score in wiffle ball?
Keep the runs exactly as in baseball: a box for each side and inning, and extra innings for a tie. What wiffle ball adds is the ghost runners, who exist only in your head:
- Agree how ghosts move before the first pitch, along with the number of innings and which side bats first.
- Call the situation out loud after every play: "two outs, ghosts on first and third".
- Count a run each time a ghost reaches home, and write the inning's total when the side is out.
Here is a 5-inning backyard game with ghost runners that move with the batter.
| When | Team | Scoring play | Points | Score | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top 1 | Kids | Double with a ghost runner on second | +1 | 1–0 | The ghost runner moves up two bases and scores. |
| Bottom 2 | Parents | Home run with a ghost runner on first | +2 | 1–2 | The batter and the ghost runner both score. |
| Top 3 | Kids | Triple with ghost runners on first and second | +2 | 3–2 | Both ghost runners score; the batter stays on third. Kids lead 3-2. |
| Top 4 | Kids | Single with a ghost runner on third | +1 | 4–2 | |
| Bottom 5 | Parents | Grand slam | +4 | 4–6 | Bases loaded, down by 2 in the last inning: all four runs count and the game is over. |
Final score Parents 6, Kids 4 after 5 innings.
The Parents trailed 4-2 going into the bottom of the 5th, loaded the bases and won it with a grand slam. As in baseball, a game-ending home run counts in full.
How the app handles it
Wiffle ball scores exactly like baseball in the app. Set the baseball game to 9, 7 or 5 innings, tap a side once for each run and move on with Next inning; the live status shows who leads and by how much, and with Pro, match stats show runs by inning. The app keeps runs only: ghost runners, outs and strikes stay with you, and a two-run homer is two taps. Other game lengths, such as 6 innings, are not available. With extra innings on, a tie after the last inning plays on one inning at a time.
Questions
Can you play wiffle ball with 3 people?
Yes. The official rules allow 1 to 5 players a side, so two against one is a legal game.
How many innings is a wiffle ball game?
Nine under the official WIFFLE Ball rules, with extra innings if it is tied. Backyard games and many leagues play fewer, often 5 or 6.
How big is a wiffle ball field?
The official rules measure it with markers on the foul lines: about 24 feet from home plate to the single markers, 20 feet more to the double markers and 20 more to the triple markers. A ball hit past the triple markers, roughly 64 feet out, and not caught is a home run.
Is there a mercy rule in wiffle ball?
Not in the official rules. Some tournaments add one: the World Wiffle Ball Championship ends a game when a team leads by 15 runs after the 3rd inning or later.
