American football scoring guides and tools
Everything you need to keep an American football score right: what each scoring play is worth, how the try after a touchdown works, what happens in overtime at each level, and how flag football changes the numbers.
American football has more ways to score than most team sports, and each one is worth a different amount: 6 for a touchdown, 1 or 2 more for the try that follows it, 3 for a field goal and 2 for a safety. The questions start at the edges. Can the defense score during a try? Why is a kick worth 2 in some youth leagues? What happens when an NFL game is still tied after overtime?
Start with how scoring works in American football, which covers every scoring play, game length and overtime in the NFL, college and high school, and scores a full game play by play. Then go deeper where you need it: two-point conversion rules and when to go for two, flag football scoring under NFL FLAG rules, and the score combinations checker, which tells you whether a final score can happen.
Every rule here is checked against the NFL rulebook and, for the other levels, the NCAA, NFHS and NFL FLAG rules. When you want to keep score during a game, the American football score tracker app lets you tap a team and pick the scoring play; after a touchdown, tapping the same team again gives you the conversion.
