Badminton scoring rules and guides
Everything you need to keep a badminton score right: how points and games work, what happens at 20-all and at the 30-point cap, who serves from which court in doubles, and the new 3x15 system that starts on 4 January 2027.
New to the scoring, or settling an argument mid-match? Start with how to keep score in badminton. It covers rally scoring, games and matches, who serves and which court to serve from, with a doubles game followed rally by rally.
Two rules cause most of the arguments. A game does not end at 21-20: from 20-all a side needs a 2-point lead, and at 29-all the next point wins. What happens at 20-20 and the 30-point cap shows every way a close game can end. And from 4 January 2027 the BWF plays games to 15 instead of 21: 3x15 scoring explained compares the two systems side by side.
For doubles, where it is easy to lose track of who serves from which court, the service court helper works it out as you tap each rally.
Every rule here is checked against the BWF Laws of Badminton, and the rally-by-rally examples are scored by the same engine as the badminton score tracker app. The app keeps the score with one tap per rally, in singles or doubles, with classic 3x21 or the new 3x15 scoring.
